IES Aljada is located in a suburban zone close to Murcia, capital of the region. This area used to be a centre for traditional irrigation farming. The school with over 1200 students aged 12 -18 has a large department for extra curricular activities, many of which are outdoor learning based and staff and students devote a great deal of their time to Learning in the Natural Environment (LINE). The school also has a very successful bi-lingual department, is involved with CLIL pedagogy and its students are involved with numerous European projects including medium-term study placements in schools across Europe. IES Aljada embraces students of all abilities and it sees as imperative the need to embrace diversity in all its identities. Parents have a high degree of involvement with the school and this has allowed the leadership to develop highly individualised programmes for students of all abilities and interests.
Staff from IES Aljada have already participated in international conferences on future learning and the school’s expertise in CLIL, LINE and diversity will be a central support for the partnership where each school will lead on two areas. IES Aljada has played an important role in educational training and development in the region with a number of its lead staff collaborating with the local authority on school improvement strategies. The school has also been involved with Comenius and Leonardo projects with the lead member of staff for the proposed project having been the coordinator of the Comenius project for IES Aljada and currently leading a regional team creating the new Social Science curriculum.
